By the first half of the 19th Century, a nationwide effort to provide free public education was well underway. Local communities created neighborhood schools | ||||||||||||

for the primary grades. In rural areas these were often small, cheaply-built structures with few amenities. State regulations later resulted in more uniform design of the buildings. Our replica is a brick structure with a bell tower and porch, a composite of the one-room schools that served our region from the late 1800's until school districts were consolidated in the 1950's.
