Streams and rivers were major impediments to travel and trade in the early years. Fords, simple wooden or stone bridges, and ferries all provided access to the other shore, but a growing community | |||||

needed more reliable bridges. Engineering advances such as the Burr Truss, a curved arch invented in 1804, allowed long spans to be erected. The framework was built by local carpenters and covered with painted weatherboard siding and a shingled or metal roof to protect the structure from the elements. Fires and floods have destroyed most of these structures but a few survivors are treasured reminders of our agrarian past. Our bridge shows some of the interior details and realistic water flowing beneath it. It is available in both painted and weathered versions. It measures 9"x3"x4". Price: $45 |
