Grist Mill
Gristmills are large buildings that grind grains like wheat, rye, corn, barley, and buckwheat into flour or meal. The grain is lifted by hoist or conveyor to the top floor and fed to the lower levels where

it is cleaned and ground by large mill stones powered by water. In an agricultural region, mills were among the first community buildings erected. Mechanical advancements in milling led to the growth of commercial farming and created a demand for more mills. By 1840 Cumberland County had over 100 mills. Our version is a typical small three-story mill with a projection over the door where grain was hoisted. The water wheel is an example of an "undershot wheel" which is turned by water flowing beneath it. Our replica measures 5.5"x4"x5".        Price: $45
