Inspired by the buildings and dollhouses of the American folk art tradition, our primitives are handcrafted of wood salvaged from old buildings. They have hand-split cedar roofs and carved plaster stonework.Like all of our work, they are highly detailed, but these pieces are less representational and not constructed to scale. Although the barn and log house have been our most popular designs, we have made stone houses, mills, other styles of log structures and an outhouse.
The Primitive Bank-Barn allowed wagons loaded with hay or grain to be driven into the second story threshing floor. Hay was stored in the third level (i.e. - in the "bank").A basement level with stone walls provided a stable for the animals, which was sheltered by a cantilevered projection of the second story known as the 'forebay'. The earliest barns were log but these were replaced by more sophisticated wood framed structures which often featured stone exterior walls.

The Primitive Log House shows what was often the most practical first permanent    dwelling for a family. It could be designed   and built without professional help, yet was large enough for the entire family. The typical Pennsylvania-German floor plan had a large kitchen and a parlor and back bedroom near the stove downstairs and two to four bedrooms upstairs. The exterior logs were commonly covered with siding to stop drafts through the chinking and disguise the fact that the house was log.

This specially-made replica is available for $140. It measures 8"x8"x10".
